President Joe Biden received a briefing Friday morning regarding the global information technology (IT) outage. After cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike released an update to its Falcon Sensor software, Microsoft Windows-based systems began crashing. The outage, which reportedly began in Australia, has impacted airlines, television networks, emergency call centers, and banking and financial systems worldwide. The issue has also impacted the Olympic games in Paris.
CrowdStrike’s CEO stated, “This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.” He added that the company is “deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers.”
A White House official stated that President Biden was briefed on the details of the outage and disruptions, stating, “His team is engaged across the interagency to get sector by sector updates throughout the day and is standing by to provide assistance as needed.”
